چکیده

This study aims at understanding the perceptual effect of combined stimulations of a human optic nerve. Phosphenes were obtained by electrical stimulations through a 4-contact spiral cuff electrode previously implanted around the right optic nerve of a completely blind retinitis pigmentosa patient. Simultaneous, interlaced or sequential stimulations resulted in the perception of multiple phosphenes whereas on single train stimuli, the patient usually perceived only a single phosphene. Moreover, when comparing the different types of combine stimulations, the synchronous paradigm more often yielded the corresponding expected number of phosphenes. A proper understanding of the rules governing these combination effects is essential to the development of pattern recognition abilities with a prosthesis system.

Simultaneous Perception of Phosphenes Generated by Direct Stimulation of a Human Optic Nerve

This study aims at understanding the effect of multiple stimulations of a human optic nerve. Phosphenes (visual sensations) were obtained by electrical stimulation of a four contacts spiral cuff electrode previously implanted around the right optic nerve of a completely blind retinitis pigmentosa patient. When a stimulation was made through several contacts or repeated, the patient perceived se...

Lateral Geniculate Body Evoked Potentials Elicited by Visual and Electrical Stimulation

PURPOSE Blind individuals who have photoreceptor loss are known to perceive phosphenes with electrical stimulation of their remaining retinal ganglion cells. We proposed that implantable lateral geniculate body (LGB) stimulus electrode arrays could be used to generate phosphene vision. We attempted to refine the basic reference of the electrical evoked potentials (EEPs) elicited by microelectri...

Position, size and luminosity of phosphenes generated by direct optic nerve stimulation

Pulses of low intensity current, delivered through a cuff electrode chronically implanted around the optic nerve of a blind retinitis pigmentosa patient generate visual sensations. These phosphenes are obtained at lower thresholds for a train of stimuli than for single pulses, which suggests the existence of a spatial and temporal integrating mechanism. The perceptions are much smaller than tho...

Artificial human vision.

Can vision be restored to the blind? As early as 1929 it was discovered that stimulating the visual cortex of an individual led to the perception of spots of light, known as phosphenes [1] . The aim of artificial human vision systems is to attempt to utilize the perception of phosphenes to provide a useful substitute for normal vision. Currently, four locations for electrical stimulation are be...
